I know this error is common, but I'm working on my first site and cannot make any sense of what I've read in other forum posts.
I recently moved my site from a shared university server and domain to a purchased domain using Go Daddy hosting. Every once in awhile I get the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error message when looking at my website. BUT, it does not occur all the time. AND, it never occurs when visiting the site (using the same code) hosted on a different server.
Site on University Server: http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~sche5372/laurel/index.html
Go Daddy Hosted Site: http://www.laurelscheiwe.com/
Why does this error message appear on one site and not the other? How do I fix it? Also, the error message always occurs in Safari and Firefox on my Mac, but does not seem to occur on some pcs--I don't get it.
Also, I only use .html text edit files to build my website and don't know what the asp.net page referred to in many forums I've read is.
Thank you for helping!! |

There's only one difference in the code between the two host, the ads and link code added by GoDaddy. I would say this is where the problem lies since there is nothing in the normal code that would cause it to happen. The only error I see is that the IE conditional statements have nothing to do with the layout since it is not a three column layout, and the conditional statements should follow not precede style tags. But this would not give any errors in any browser.
You may want to check for a better free host, I use 000webhost.com but there are references to many others in the web hosting section of the forum. |

I don't know how many times GoDaddy told me it was a problem with my code.
Thanks! All is good now. |
