I'm a newbie when it comes to mySQL, I want to know what I need to be able to use it, I know I need php, but what else do I need and how do I use it?

First, learn about Relational Databases. You can try "Introduction to Databases and Relational Data Model" by Maurer and Scherbakov. StackOverflow has some better recommendations:

Also note that you don't need PHP, as there are other languages that support database connections.
