Either flash or Java could do it. If the banner text can be embedded in the web page, you could even use Javascript or (though I wouldn't recommend it) a marquee tag. The problem with the marquee tag is it's an MS HTML extension, which means it won't work with other browsers and possible future versions of IE (I imagine IE 7, at least, will support it). It should be noted that with a bit of style, Mozilla will support the marquee tag, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. Your best bet will be (as you asked) an embedded object such as Java and Flash use. I would tend to go with Flash. The flash plugin seems to have less overhead than a JVM, and is thus faster to start. The final decision should be based on which you are more comfortable with and which is more likely to be active on a visitor's computer.

Why should you use ColdFusion?

It is all about the resources and the elegant simplicity. ColdFusion does a great job and saves time and money. It doesn’t require a dozen computers and knowledge of several languages and development environments to develop reliable apps. Intranet development with CF is a very appropriate use of the system to produce thin-client apps. Customized components and tags can be developed easily for repeated tasks and to produce efficient code. See www.fusion-framework.com for a discussion.

Some people say that ASP or PHP are free, and that is a reason to use them. Developing with ColdFusion is free too. Just download it from Macromedia (now Adobe) and test with a local installation of the server, in which case you will be using a superior and easier development system. Furthermore, CF hosting is inexpensive from many hosting service where there is no extra fee for ColdFusion.
