I'm considering starting a forum and would appreciate feedback. 3 of my favourites are these:-

http://barclaypress.com/bboard/viewforum.php?f=18

http://bornpoets.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=rhyme

http://www.thefreedomexchange.com/forums/index.php

Which is best, please (bearing in mind that born poets (proboards) is a freebie)?
Thanks.
:)

phpBB used by barclaypress, and simplemachines used by thefreedomexchange, are also both free. Proboards is a service, the two former are software. Obviously we favor phpBB, but then again I didn't know of simplemachines when I created this forum.

Thanks zylstra, i've learned even more than i hoped!
I've seen ads for hosted forums, but didn't know you could get your own software free - it sounds a good option.
thanks again. :)

P.S. This forum runs like a dream (of course!), but the examples I quoted are used for similar content to mine.

I use a ProBoard simply because it means low maintenance. They are quite flexible too, lots off alterations can be made.

Even though I use one, I also think that third party forum providers will never help to make your site look 100% professional.

a good hoster ive found (free) is roxr. although you have to include roxr in the name (as with all free hosters) you get an entire server for free. so you can have a website and forum(s) for free. thats what i am using for my site and although the site and forum takes a few seconds to load (5 - 10 sec) it runs very well after that.

NOTE: roxr just bought a new server so it has been down a lot lately, but, all hosted servers have been transferred and they know have an automatic hosting system which seems to work much better than the request system, where the admins create it for you.

I would say that the top three forum software applications in use are (in no particular order):
http://www.vbulletin.com/
http://www.invisionboard.com/
http://www.phpbb.com/

PHPBB is free, and is usually easy installed with most hosting providers. The other two are paid licenses. Keep in mind that you won't want to run your forum "as is" and will want to do some skin modifications as well. Anyone that runs forum software will tell you that the one they use is the best one, but it depends on what you are using the forum for, and if any of the additional items that are available for the different products you will use. (for example, if you want a photo gallery or blog on your site, available for all members to use and post their own photos and blog, then Invision Power Board would be a better choice. If these features aren't important, then maybe one of the other ones.
