alignment issues

I'm writing out an email signature in html, currently I have a table with a cell which uses rowspan, i would like the content of this cell to align to the bottom. I currently have the other cells aligning fine, and it appears fine in lotus notes using <valign="bottom"> but in gmail and outlook this doesn't work. Does anyone know whether there is an incompatability or a way around this??
