content box picture, and margin/padding?

I have a content box, and whatever I do to it, the text still stays on the left, it does not sit in the middle like it should.

Code:

.box{background-image: url('images/boxtext.jpg');
width:300px;height:50px;background-position:50%;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding:40px;margin-left:40px;}

can anyone help with this?

Ok all I found a way to get it to work. Had some part of a script in the code, mucking it all up.
