Hi all - I am in the process of converting my old table-based site to a new one using SSI. However, I want to test it out prior to sedning it up to my hosting company.....how can I do this? I believe that I can get Apache? Any opinions as to something that may be better than Apache, or should that be fine for my purposes? I don't need a database at this point, so I'm not using ASP, .NET, etc......I just want to use SSI.....

Thanks!
Steve

Which SSI are you using?:

SSI is most suitable for simple automation tasks; more complex server-side processing is often done with one of the more complex programming languages Perl, PHP, ASP,ASP.NET,JSP, CFML, Python and Ruby.

That will determine the local server-setup, but why go to all that trouble. It will work or not work for you. Just test it online with one include file and html file. Just be sure your .htacess file is set to do what you want.

Thanks for the reply...I'm not going to use any of the more complex processing....in fact, I'm just going to use three "#include virtual" directives....I simply want to take advantage of needing to update my header/foter/navigation panel once instead of twenty times in my pages. Anyway, Yahoo hosts my site now, but they don't support SSI. So, I wanted to re-do my site, test it out, then have godaddy or someone like that host it.

Well, once you get a proper site that allows SSI, it will work once set up. I use it on my site so I know you are wasting your time testing it.

My suggestion is to stay away from GoDaddy. Buy your own domain name and find a really pro hosting site.

Can you list some suggestions other than godaddy.....researching this is kinda confusing when there are a bunch of them out there. To me it's kinda like when you move to a new location and you know there are tons of mechanics to take your car to, but which ones are really good, who can you trust, etc...know what I mean? Anyway, any suggestions are appreciated!
