If you view the source code for amazon and scroll down to the bottom you will see the comment meow right after the closing html code.

Well considering they don't even use a DOCTYPE,
for the ampersand, or having multiple tags open, it just seems to be one more problem.
But some webmasters put in a little tidbit of code to help identify themselves from time to time. I never did - did not see a need for it. It also could be a code name for the webmaster that last updated the website as well.
