Regarding the .htaccess file with the lines
Addtype text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
Should this file have a name or just the extension? Can you create .htaccess and .shtml files using Notepad or Wordpad? If so, how do you prevent the .txt extension from automatically appearing when saving. I can create .html files fine in Notepad or Wordpad, but cannot make an .htaccess or .shtml file without the .txt extension. Thanks for your help. |

yes you can, just upload the file to your server and modify the name from .htaccess.txt to .htaccess on the server.
be careful with those files, they can really mess stuff up if you dont know what youre doing |

To answer your other question, it should not have a name.

If using Windows XP & Notepad.
First show file extensions
Folder Options>View>
Uncheck the option to Hide extensions for known file types
In Notepad
Goto Save As and change the Save as type to All Files |
