What is the purpose of sitemaps. In the Google site it mentions that adding sitemaps in your website will help in the webcrawl.

however I receive an error when I Click the verify button
Verification status: NOT VERIFIED
We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 in the header.

Basically it helps Google to find all the pages quickly. It does not have to spider your website, but just look for that file.

Do you use a custom 404 error page? Can you use ASP? If you can use ASP, put this before the <head>
Code:
<%
Response.Status = 404
%>
otherwise, contact your hosting company to see what is the problem. They might have to change a configuration.

You can notify google immediately of updated pages. If the page is deep in your site they sometimes take ages to re-index it.

Here is a nice free tool to make your sitemap. Be sure to look at everything it generates, as there are some pages you may not want indexed.

My site went from about 7 indexed pages to 24 overnight. If content is in fact king, this is a really big deal.

And if you want help making a robots.txt file, this might help
