Can i replace localhost with the IP address

Why is the localhost (ip 127.0.0.1) used .
Why cant the actuall IP address of the machine used instead of local host .
How does the process of connection differ in the two cases .

What IP address Apache would respond to is imperative in httpd.conf, so you'll need to modify it before the IP addresses are interchangeable.
