Aligning Text left and right on the same line

Our website homepage uses a skin where the top line houses links for Contact, Search etc.. Recently we were asked to add a string which displayed Date and Time and right align it in the opposite corner to the existing text. The code below worked with IE7 (not with Mozilla Firefox) but recently everyone has upgraded to IE8 and now the Date and Time string sits midway between the right side and the existing text.

We have tried using Align=Right and other align commands but the browser seems to ignore them. Can someone please advise how we can align some text left and some right on the same line which will be recognised by IE8, IE7 and Mozilla. Failing that can we recognise the browser being used and use the right code for the right browser.
