bgsound and email preview panes

I am trying to set up background sound for an email message. The problem I am having is that an auto play will begin in a preview pane such as Outlook, and will begin again if the message is actually opened (both the preview and open are interpreted as "open" and the sound is launched). Ideally I would like it to launch only once.

The other option would be a play button. The problem I have had with that is I haven't found a way to do that without it popping up a window prompting the user to download the sound file.

1. Is there a way for the sound to play only once even in the presence of a preview pane?
2. If not, is there a way to code a play such that it just plays?

(BTW, I am aware of the annoyance factor of bgsound and doubt I can talk them out of it. You know how it is.)
