Images in Drop-down Menus

Is there any way to make a Form Selection List with images instead of text items? Such as a list of Fonts which depicts an image of each available font.

I found a reference to such an ability back in a W3C 3.0 document, but nothing since.

Thanks for any enlightenment. I'm open to any type of solution (HTML, JS, CSS).

You can change the background color of a select & a textarea & even add an image to a text area but for the select - I would have to agree - I do not think it is possible

Thanks for the responses, guys. I was hoping I was missing something... but alas. Interestingly, it does appear that such a feature almost made it into the 3.0 spec. Maybe it will in future.
