Unwanted tabs in my form fields

Hi,
First post on this board.
I have a php page with several forms. Each field is filled with the current mySQL entry and then overwritten by any changes. The beginning of each field contains unwanted tabs. The value is OK in the db and it displays OK elsewhere. But when the db data is first echoed onto the form field it has a leading tab. I tried trim() but no change. I echo plain text before the db field and it also has a leading tab.
Any clues???
